Knoxville is the third-largest city in the U.S. state of Tennessee, behind Memphis and Nashville, and is the county seat of Knox County. Knoxville is home to the University of Tennessee.

Knoxville was first settled in 1786 by James White, a Revolutionary War hero. The city was named in honor of Henry Knox, a general in the American Revolutionary War who was later the first Secretary of War. Knoxville quickly grew due to its strategic location as a port on the Tennessee River and its status as a gateway to the Great Smoky Mountains. The city’s economy was initially based on timber and iron production but later diversified with manufacturing, wholesale and retail trade as significant income sources.
